Year 7 Brannel students, Katie
Ruddock and Peter Rowe will help to
cut the first turf at a special
ceremony being held at 10.00 am on
Friday, 29 January 2010.
Friday, 29 January will be a real
red letter today for staff, pupils,
Governors and parents at Brannel
School when the first turf is cut to
mark the start of work on their new
£17.2 million school building.
Planning permission for the new
state-of-the-art building for the
specialist English & Performing Arts
school in St Stephen was granted by
Cornwall Council at the end of last
year and at 10.00 am on Friday,
Brannel pupils Katie Ruddock and
Peter Rowe will help to cut the
first turf.
The new school, designed by HLM
Architects, will be built by Kier
Western, to replace the old school
buildings which have aged beyond
economic repair.
The new facilities will provide
6,622 sq m of teaching space for up
to 750 pupils, as well as a theatre,
performing arts spaces, multi-use
games area, all-weather floodlit
sports pitch, outdoor amphitheatre
and a specialist Area Resource Base
to cater for up to 12 pupils with
special needs. The building has been
designed to provide maximum
flexibility, and also includes
integrated ICT facilities to provide
further opportunities to increase
personalised learning and enable the
school to take advantage of future
developments in ICT.
The buildings will meet the latest
environmental standards with ground
source heating, solar water heating
and green roofs and is expected to
achieve the Excellent BREEAM rating
.
Pupils from all years at Brannel
School have been closely involved
with the design of their new school
building and Headteacher Ray Bell
says that their involvement will
result in the creation of a very
special place of learning:
“Our pupils, staff and members of
the local community have worked
intelligently and creatively with
HLM architects and Cornwall Council
staff. What a privilege it is for
us all to play a part in designing
such wonderful new facilities”.
Charlene Meaden
is a member of the Pupil
Consultation Design Team. She said:
“Spending two days at Eden and
the new Penryn College was really
helpful in clarifying our ideas. I
have really enjoyed helping to plan
for the 21st century”.
Another member of the team,
Dannielle Bilkey commented: “
The flythrough presentation of the
interior is awesome – you can
experience the building leaping from
the architect’s drawings. When it
was shown in Year Group assemblies
recently, it brought the whole
building to life and amazed all the
pupils and even some of the
teachers”.
To keep disruption to a minimum,
the new school is being built on
the current playing fields
directly behind the existing
school. Construction work will
be completed in early summer
next year, with staff and pupils
expected to move into their new
school in May 2011. Work on
demolishing the existing school
building will then begin. The
Sports Centre and a small part
of the existing school will then
be refurbished to provide
additional sports facilities, a
fitness suite and a community
base.
